ISO 17025 Accreditation: What It Means for Your Audiology Clinic

ISO/IEC 17025 is the international standard for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories. Published by the International Organization for Standardization, it specifies requirements for a laboratory's management system, technical competency, measurement traceability, uncertainty estimation, and reporting practices.

Accreditation to ISO 17025 is granted by national accreditation bodies — in the United States, the primary body is A2LA (American Association for Laboratory Accreditation). Accreditation is not self-declared; it requires a rigorous initial assessment and periodic surveillance audits.

Most audiology accreditation bodies — including JCAHO, ASHA, and the Accreditation Commission for Audiology Education — require or strongly recommend that audiometric equipment be calibrated by an ISO 17025-accredited laboratory. During a facility survey, the accreditation reviewer may ask to see calibration certificates and verify the laboratory's accreditation status.

Beyond compliance, ISO 17025 accreditation means that the calibration uncertainty values reported on your certificate have been independently verified. An unaccredited provider may use the same equipment but has not demonstrated to an independent body that their processes, staff competency, and environmental controls meet the standard.

NIST traceability means that every measurement made by the calibration laboratory can be traced through an unbroken chain of calibrations back to the national measurement standards maintained by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Each link in the chain adds a known measurement uncertainty.

For audiometer calibration, this chain typically runs: NIST primary acoustic standards → accredited laboratory reference microphone → working standard sound level meter → audiometer coupler measurement. The laboratory's accreditation scope specifies the lowest uncertainty they can achieve at each link.

Do not rely solely on a laboratory's website claim of accreditation. Verify directly through the accrediting body's public database. A2LA maintains a searchable online directory at a2la.org where you can confirm current accreditation status and download the laboratory's current scope of accreditation.

The scope document is the most important verification step. It lists the specific measurement parameters — frequencies, transducer types, measurement ranges — for which the laboratory is accredited. Ensure that the scope includes the specific instruments you need calibrated.
